Why UPI transaction data is triggering GST notices for small merchants, and how to respond.

Tax authorities have increasing access to UPI transaction data through banks and payment processors, and are cross-referencing high transaction volumes on personal or unregistered business UPI IDs against GST registration records — merchants receiving payments that suggest business turnover above the registration threshold, without a corresponding GSTIN, are the most common target for these notices.
The notice itself usually asks the recipient to explain the nature and volume of UPI receipts and, if applicable, to register for GST and account for any tax liability on past unregistered turnover. It is not automatically proof of wrongdoing — personal transfers, reimbursements and non-business receipts routed through the same UPI ID can inflate the numbers without any actual taxable supply having occurred.
The right response is to reconstruct which receipts were genuinely business income versus personal transfers, register for GST promptly if turnover genuinely crosses the threshold, and reply to the notice within its stated deadline with supporting bank/UPI statements rather than ignoring it — an unanswered notice escalates far more quickly than one addressed with a clear, documented explanation.
